A Safer Strand
For the Safer Strand traffic management vote (which didn’t include our tamariki), there is a clear mandate to make the Strand safer for pedestrians with 79% of 393 votes wanting pedestrianisation of either all or part of the Strand, or a designated Shared Zone. 64% wanted some form of pedestrianisation with 19% opting for the middle Strand from Russell Fresh to the Marae and 45% asking for full pedestrianisation allowing access for essential vehicles. So, on that basis the recommendation is to trial pedestrianisation of the middle Strand while the north Strand up past the Duke to the boat ramp is trialled as a Shared Zone – vehicles are allowed but pedestrians have priority and the speed will be lowered. This allows both options to be tried out over the coming summer.
